Basic Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible to adopt, you must meet the following basic requirements.

  • You must be 21 years old or older

  • You should own your home or have a rental that allows large dogs. We will need a copy of your lease or a letter from your landlord at some point during the application process.

  • Your other dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered (dogs being shown or bonafide breeders are excepted; we will ask to see titles / contracts.) All pets in the household must be current on vaccinations.

  • No children under 6, as we are unsure that this will be safe for your family.

  • Your county or city pet limits should not be exceeded (please check this by calling your county animal control office.)

  • You must be able to take on the financial responsibility of owning a dog

Other things you should know about working with Greyhound Welfare

  • A fenced yard is not required.

  • Stairs are okay.

  • The dogs are already crate trained and most are other-dog social.

  • All our dogs are 100% up to date on all vet care, are neutered, and are in good health to the best of our knowledge.

  • Our dogs are heartworm negative, clean, and free of fleas and ticks. They are on heartworm preventative. They have been de-wormed for all internal parasites.

  • All our dogs live comfortably in foster homes where they are socialized, taught how to live in a real home, and constantly evaluated and educated. We know our dogs so much better because we live with them.

  • Most of our dogs can be trained to live safely with small dogs and cats. Our foster homes can advise you about the details.

  • We perform a phone interview and home visit for each placement. The better we get to know you, the better we can help with placing the right dog in your home.

  • We prefer that you stay open to which dog you would like to adopt, as our mix is constantly changing, and a better-suited dog might become available during the course of the application process.

  • We follow up with our adopters on a routine basis to offer any help or support that is needed.

  • We operate a mailing list exclusive to our adopters where you can swap dog-sitting, vet care information, ask for help, get together for dog runs, or just share stories.

  • Donations are always needed, and are tax-deductible. Greyhound Welfare is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
