The special nature of a brood mama is best explained below by Dennis McKeon, a well respected former greyhound trainer. Mr. McKeon writes many articles about greyhounds that are highly informative.
“There is nothing more valuable to a greyhound breeder than a brood female who is a good mother, and who can birth and help him raise offspring that are viable racing competitors. While there are dozens of fine and productive sires, any of whom a breeder may choose to mate with his female, the average breeder considers himself extremely fortunate if, at any given time, he has more than one female who is able to pass on desirable traits to offspring, and to produce greyhounds who can perform and compete at a high level. Many racing dynasties can all trace their origins to but a single brood matron. Great brood females are often referred to as “blue hens”—which is a testament to their value and rarity. So, in any successful breeding operation, the brood females are the focus of attention, and the linchpin to whatever success is to be realized. They are, in the hands of all but the most obtuse breeders, treated in a manner that reflects their crucial importance. Which is why they make such loving and endearing pets.”
